Last week, our daughter, who is quite excited about leprechauns, brought home a finger painted gold sheet of paper from Playschool. She wanted to make more shimmery papers and punch out coins to hide for her younger brother to find. We then extended the activity, by adding a bit of glitter to watercolour paints! These are two simple ideas that could easily be replicated at home or school with very fun results!

Materials

Gold Coins

Here a few options for making the coins or go with a technique that you like!

Thick paper (such as cardstock)

Circle punch (or you could trace around a milk jug lid and cut out your own circles)

Paint brush

Yellow watercolour paint

Paintbrush

Metallic pens

Glitter paint or glue

Tray

Glitter Rainbow Paints

Water

Paint

Watercolour paper

Paintbrushes

Watercolour paint

Glitter paint

We always find these items helpful too:

Smock

Craft tray

Directions

GOLD COINS

Don your smock. Go with any painting technique you like. You could:

Finger paint with gold paint

Paint with glitter glue or glitter paint and cover it with a watercolour wash.

Draw out a design using metallic markers and cover it with a watercolour wash.

Allow to dry overnight.

Punch out your circles. We like going around the perimeter and then cutting off the edges and repeating this step.

<img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-12559" alt="Create with the rainbow!

Put your coins into a pot (we used a black bowl, but a Halloween caldron also makes a good container!).

Hide our coins within your home or classroom and have your friends find them! Our daughter did both, bringing the coins to school after!

Mesh-like items (such as the bag from onions, lemons, avocados)

Items with holes from packaging etc.

Paper (we used watercolour and/or cardstock)

Craft tray

Paint

Paint brushes (with stiff bristles)

Tape

We always find a smock helpful too:

Directions

Don your smock. Lay your paper in your craft tray. Tape down your mesh.

This process works best with a dry brush dipped in the paint, dabbing in an up an down motion, rather than painting across.

We then carefully removed our mesh bags and taped on the plastic piece with the holes, creating a layered effect. You could wait in between in between layers allowing drying time.

Tray

Bubble wrap

Scissors

Permanent marker

We always find a smock helpful too!

Directions

Don your smock. Dilute your paints. Depending on your children’s or students’ ages, you can use plastic or glass jars to store your paint. We usually pop them on a tray to catch any drips.

We taped our paper onto the table, making a border around the piece. (Taping half on the paper and half on the table.)

We then used our watercolour paints to make various types of lines. If you need a prompt to help you with this, you can play different types of music and create a line that match the mood of the music. Think about the thickness of lines, the shape, are they dotted or continuous?

(7 year old) (Almost 5 year old) (2 year old. He accidentally split the blue paint onto his paper which we mopped up with paper towels. He then decided to dip the leftover roll/tube in the purple paint. This spontaneous idea is a great example of letting your child lead.)

Once dry we added highlights with gold paint to our lines. (Our daughter’s idea.) Our son’s idea of using cotton swabs to correct any paint that went off the lines was quite helpful! Allow to dry.

Our son said that the lines reminded him of an Easter egg and the next step was born! First he measured out bubble wrap so it was the same size as his paper and cut it. He then drew an egg on the smooth side. He had an interesting tip- first form an oval and then draw a more narrow top to form an egg.

Pinch your bubble wrap in the centre of the egg and make a snip. Cut the egg out. You could easily modify this to any shape that you like or simply layer the bubble wrap over your work if you like.

Using your brayer, coat it with paint and apply it to the bubbly side of your bubble wrap. You could also use a brush. You want to do this part fairly quickly so that the paint layer doesn’t dry.

Apply your wrap, paint down, onto your lines. Depending on your age, you may need a bit of adult help with this step.

Rub your bubble wrap (on the smooth side) to assure contact of the paint to the page. Carefully remove your bubble wrap and voila!

Remove your tape carefully from the edges of your work and display your work!

Purpose

Exploring different types of lines.

Safety Notes

We suggest that you wear a smock and use a craft tray to protect your clothing and surfaces.

Use scissors with care and adult supervision.

Be sure to store bubble wrap out of the reach of young children.

Watercolour paper (or cardstock)

Liquid watercolour paints

Water

Dish detergent

Foaming soap pumps (You could use any containers that create foam, such as baby wash or this mousse. Be sure to wash your containers out before use.)

We always find these items helpful too:

Smock

Craft tray

Directions

Don your smock. Lay your paper in your tray. The kids were so eager to start this that they didn’t cut the paper down to lie flat in the tray, which is what we did the second (and third!) time that we tried this.

Dilute your paint according to the directions- we filled the soap containers about 1/4 full and put in several tablespoons of dish soap. We swirled it around a bit to mix the “ingredients”!

Allow it to dry overnight- what did your bubbles create?

This was the collaborative piece:

These were ones done individually:

And these were ones where the kids played with the foam on the paper:

Purpose

Exploring different tools to paint with.

Working collaboratively.

Developing motor skills to dispense the soap.

Safety Notes

We suggest that you wear a smock and use a craft tray to protect your clothing and surfaces.

As this activity uses dish soap it is not recommended for children 0-3 years of age or those that tend to put soap in their mouth. Be sure to keep the foam away from one’s eyes and wash your hands after use.
