When your Nan gives you foaming soap containers, this is a perfect time to explore what you can do with them.  The kids were in pure delight with this one!

Materials

  • Watercolour paper (or cardstock)
  • Liquid watercolour paints
  • Water
  • Dish detergent

Foamers

  • Foaming soap pumps (You could use any containers that create foam, such as baby wash or this mousse.  Be sure to wash your containers out before use.)

We always find these items helpful too:

  • Smock
  • Craft tray

Directions

  • Don your smock.  Lay your paper in your tray.  The kids were so eager to start this that they didn’t cut the paper down to lie flat in the tray, which is what we did the second (and third!) time that we tried this.
  • Dilute your paint according to the directions- we filled the soap containers about 1/4 full and put in several tablespoons of dish soap.  We swirled it around a bit to mix the “ingredients”!

  • Allow it to dry overnight- what did your bubbles create?
  • This was the collaborative piece:

  • These were ones done individually:

  • And these were ones where the kids played with the foam on the paper:

Purpose

  • Exploring different tools to paint with.
  • Working collaboratively.
  • Developing motor skills to dispense the soap.

Safety Notes

  • We suggest that you wear a smock and use a craft tray to protect your clothing and surfaces.
  • As this activity uses dish soap it is not recommended for children 0-3 years of age or those that tend to put soap in their mouth.  Be sure to keep the foam away from one’s eyes and wash your hands after use.

I think that “storing valuable items for re-use” (hoarding) is a pre-requisite for being an educator! I think that when you decide to recycle something, the next week you see it used in an interesting way! This idea was lots of fun!
