Put together a little tray of rainbow coloured items with your children or students and then create something magical!

Materials

  • Sectioned tray (this is an old veggies and dip one, but you can find similar items at garage sales, thrift stores, dollar stores etc.)
  • Items of various colours (a perfect way to use up odds and ends.)  Here are some examples, but go with whatever you have!
  1. Pom poms
  2. Feathers
  3. Old puzzle pieces
  4. Chenille sticks
  5. Beads
  6. Foam items
  7. Wooden sticks
  8. Metallic papers
  9. Jewels
  10. Sequins
  11. Buttons
  12. Stickers

  • Scraps of coloured paper

  • Patterned Scissors (Optional)

  • You could either pre-sort the items or have your children or students sort the items with you (or independently).

Purpose

  • Sorting (In this case according to the attribute of colour)
  • Planning and creating a piece.  (This could include skills such as cutting, gluing etc.)

Safety Notes

  • We suggest that you wear a smock and use a craft tray to protect your clothing and surfaces.
  • Use scissors with care and direct adult supervision.
  • Cord, yarn etc. can be a strangulation hazard, therefore be sure to use with direct supervision and for its intended purpose.
  • Beads and small pieces can be a choking hazard therefore be sure to keep them out of the reach of children ages 0-3 years of age or those that tend to put things into their mouths.
