It is no secret that we just LOVE using nature as a starting point for creating, so we were really excited to read Melissa of Fireflies and Mud Pies book: Sticks and Stones.  It is beautifully photographed and encourages children to get out into nature, appreciate it and make with it!  The book is filled with a variety of projects so it easily appealed to all three of our children and is a perfect resource to add to your collection for summer holidays!  Our youngest child has going to Forest School for morning of the week in his Pre-K program and I can see the value that this would add to a classroom setting as well, allowing more children to meaningfully connect to nature.

Sticks and Stones Book Review: If your kids like getting out and creating with nature, this is an amazing resource! It would be perfect for Forest School as well!

  • Using the clear directions by the author, Melissa Lenning, my youngest collected loads of sticks, observing different lengths, types etc.
  • We then trimmed them with the snipping portion of pliers (while wearing safety glasses) and secured the twigs together to create this fairy small world with a nature home (the roof is removable).
  • Not only did the project get our children enjoying the outdoors, it got them carefully observing nature in our surroundings and using those collections to create with.  As you can see, it stimulated their imaginations and once they tried one project it piqued their interest in others.  This beautiful woven tent is their next choice!
